About the Foundation:

A F Mujibur Rahman Foundation was established as Charitable Trust in 1985 by late Rezaur Rahman FCA, (Founder-Partner of Rahman Rahman Huq) in honour of his late father, Abul Faiz Mujibur Rahman ICS. While the Foundation supports a wide range of institutions and activities, its primary focus is on the expansion of educational opportunities and improvement in the quality of education across Bangladesh.

Abul Faiz Mujibur Rahman ICS (1897-1945)

Abul Faiz Mujibur Rahman was born on 23 September1897 at Gerda, Faridpur. He completed his earlier studies at Faridpur Zilla School and then moved to Dhaka College where be obtained his B.Sc degree. Thereafter, he moved to Calcutta University where he took the Master’s examination in Pure Mathematics in 1920, standing first in the First Class and in the process surpassing the previous record mark achieved by Sir Ashutosh Mukherjee, then Vice Chancellor of Calcutta University. When Dhaka University was founded in 1921, it was offered what was then a princely benefaction of Rs. 300/- per month from Nawabzade Altaf Ali Chowdhury, son of one of its founding fathers, Nawab Nawab Ali Chowdhury, for the purpose of setting up a Lectureship in Mathematics with special reference to the development of the sciences by the Arabs. The first choice for this prestigious Lectureship was A F Mujibur Rahman who had so recently distinguished himself in the field of mathematics. Unfortunately, he could not avail himself of the distinction, having opted to join the Indian Civil Service, one of the first Bengali Muslims to do so. In 1921 he went to the UK for training and pre-probationary studies at Balliol College, Oxford and returned to India in 1923 to assume his first posting.
A F Mujibur Rahman had chosen to join the judicial service because of the value he placed on the purist of justice and independence of thought. These values were evident during the trial of Ambika Chakrabarti as part of the Supplementary Chittagong Armoury Raid Case in 1933 when he dissented against the death penalty pronounced by the two other members of the presiding Tribunal, A. de C.Williams and N.H. Mukherjee. The sentence was later commuted to life imprisonment by the High Court. He served in the judiciary for many years, including some time as District Judge of Dhaka. He died prematurely of a heart attack on 12th May 1945, just before taking up his assignment as a justice of the Calcutta High Court.

Rezaur Rahman FCA (1929-2015)

Rezaur Rahman was born on 24th July 1929 in Calcutta, India. He completed his schooling in Calcutta before going on to graduate with a First Class First degree in Commerce from Dhaka University in 1952. He qualified as a Chartered Accountant in the UK and became an Associate of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of England and Wales. He returned to the country in 1957 as a Partner in Price Waterhouse Peat’s office until 1962 when, as a Founder Partner, he set up Rahman Rahman Huq, the premier firm of Chartered Accountants in Bangladesh. In the early 1970s he set up a consultancy firm in the UK where he lived for much of his later life. He was a Founder of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Bangladesh and later set up a chapter in the UK. He was widely known as an icon for members of his profession. Less well-known was his role as ‘the quiet philanthropist’ because he never sought any publicity for his efforts. He donated almost all his resources to the A F Mujibur Rahman Foundation. Rezaur Rahman passed away in London on the 1st July 2015.
